The name of the park is derived from the Great Ruaha River, which flows along its southeastern margin and is the focus for game-viewing. Ruaha situated in central Tanzania about 130km west of Iringa. Ruaha is a part of Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, which includes Rungwa Game Reserve, Kizigo and Muhesi Game Reserves. The park can be reached by car, 12hrs (during dry season) from Dar es salaam, 5 hours from Mikumi National Park. There are two airstrips – Msembe airstrip and Jongomeru Airstrip.

Ruaha is home of Hippos, Crocodiles, Water bucks, Buffalo, Leopard, Hyena, Wild dogs, Jackals, Lions, Antelope species such as Kudu, Impala, Sable antelope, Roan antelope, Grant gazelle, tiny Dik-dik along with Giraffe, Zebra, Warthogs, Mongoose, Porcupine, Wildcat, Civet and an astonishing 465 species of bird have been recorded in the park.
